Footlite Musicals will open its 2014-2015 season with its Young Adults production of “Shrek, the Musical,“ with performances July 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26 and 27 at the Hedback Community Theater at 1847 North Alabama Street in Indianapolis.

Curtain time for the Thursday performances is 7:30 p.m. Curtain time for the Friday and Saturday performances is 8 p.m., and Sunday matinees have a 2:30 p.m. curtain.

The Tony Award-nominated musical is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film of the same name. Written for the stage by David Lindsay-Abaire, with music by Jeanine Tesori and lyrics by Lindsay-Abaire, the musical utilizes characters first created by William Steig.

In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseeming ogre shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a bad guy with a short temper and over a dozen fairy tale misfits, you have the makings of a wonderful evening of family entertainment. Footlite’s Young Adults production features performers ages 18 to 25.

Produced for Footlite by Amy Douglas and Tim Alan Thompson, “Shrek” is directed by Kathleen Clarke Horrigan and choreographed by Trish Roberds, with vocal direction by Tara Roberds and Scott Fleshood, musical direction by Schuyler Brinson and costume coordination by Curt Pickard. The cast features Ryan England as Shrek, Lauren Russel as Fiona, Antonio King as Donkey and Jonathan Krouse as Lord Farquaard.

Admission for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances is $20 for ages 12 and up and $10 for ages 11 and under.  Seats are $10 for the Thursday performances. All seats are reserved, and reservations may be made on-line at Footlite’s website, www.footlite.org. You may also call the Footlite box office at (317) 926-6630.

On Sunday, July 20, before the matinee performance, a special Shrek Breakfast with the Cast will be held beginning at 11:30 a.m. Attendees can experience Gingerbread Man decorating, pin the tail on Donkey, visit backstage and more. Three different packages, including tickets to the matinee, are offered. To learn more details about the breakfast and to order a package, visit Footlite’s website.

Besides “Shrek,“ Footlite’s 59th season will include productions of “Cats,” “Mame,” “White Christmas,” “The Story of My Life,” “Hairspray” and “The Who’s Tommy.” Season tickets are currently on sale for $100 each and include all seven productions.
